The Evolution of Taxes and Hours Worked in Austria, 1970-2005
نویسنده
چکیده
Aggregate hours worked per working-age person decreased in Austria by 25% from 1970 to 2005. During the same time period, taxes increased, particularly the effective marginal tax rate on labor income. Using a standard general equilibrium growth model with taxes, I quantitatively assess the role played by the evolution of taxes on the evolution of hours worked in Austria. The model accounts for 76% of the observed decrease in hours worked per working-age person. My results are in line with other studies, such as Prescott (2002), which find taxes play an important role in explaining aggregate hours worked. JEL Classification: E24, J22, E13

Taxes, Transfers, and the Labor Supply of Single Mothers
The wage elasticities of labor supply at the participation and hours worked margins are focal parameters of interest for understanding the work disincentive effects of taxes and transfers and the attendant design of optimal tax and transfer schemes. In this paper I use sweeping changes in U.S. tax policy, welfare policy, and the demand for skill over the 1980s and 1990s to identify the wage ela...
متن کاملLong-Term Changes in Labor Supply and Taxes: Evidence from OECD Countries, 1956-2004
We document large differences in trend changes in hours worked across OECD countries over the period 1956-2004. We then assess the extent to which these changes are consistent with the intratemporal first order condition from the neoclassical growth model. We find large and trending deviations from this condition, and that the model can account for virtually none of the changes in hours worked....
متن کاملThe Politics of Consumption Taxes: Globalization and the Median Voter
The regressive nature of consumption taxes poses a challenge to partisan theory. Using data for up to 20 OECD countries in the period 1970-2003 this article aims to explore the question of whether the idea that social democratic governments typically have to compromise on policy goals and core constituency interests to make themselves more appealing to the median voter necessitates the use of r...
متن کاملTaxation and Labor Supply of Married Women across Countries: A Macroeconomic Analysis
We document contemporaneous differences in the aggregate labor supply of married couples across 17 European countries and the US. Based on a model of joint household decision making, we quantify the contribution of international differences in non-linear labor income taxes and consumption taxes, as well as the educational composition, and gender wage gaps and educational premia, to the internat...
متن کاملReal Business Cycles and Automatic Stabilizers∗
We show that in a standard, technology shock-driven one-sector real business cycle model, the stabilization effects of government fiscal policy depend crucially on how labor hours enter the household’s period utility function and the associated labor-market behavior. In particular, when the household utility is logarithmic in both consumption and leisure, income taxes are destabilizing and gove...
